Hipódromo de las Américas: The Center of Mexico City’s Racing

When you think of horse racing in Mexico City, there’s one name that consistently pops up: Hipódromo de Las Américas.
This track isn’t just any racing venue but part of the beating heart of organized racing in one of the world’s biggest cities.
Hipódromo de las Américas shares a long history. It all started on March 6, 1943, and since that day, it has become Mexico City’s premier racing venue. It replaced older tracks like Peralvillo and La Condesa by making every single thing better.
Today, the racetrack is owned by Codere Group and operated by Administradora Mexicana de Hipódromo. This means it is the hottest track not just in Mexico’s capital, but in the entire country.
Hipódromo de las Américas Stats
We are talking about a racetrack that can accommodate around 20,000 people in the main grandstand and a couple of thousand more around the track. It has a stable capacity for about 1,700 horses (huge), and the track length is 1,408 meters (or 7 furlongs). The venue can host up to 14 horses per race, so it's just like the big boys, like Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby.
The track is slightly smaller than the Kentucky Derby, but it features the same shape and an impressive grandstand. The racing season starts from late January through mid-December, and it is a nice way for horse racing bettors to warm up before the Kentucky Derby.
Although you cannot see world-class contenders like on the Kentucky Derby 2026 as highlighted on TwinSpires.com, some of the races at Hipódromo de las Américas feature top thoroughbred horses.
The Racing Program & Major Events
Hipódromo de las Américas hosts plenty of races, and the venue has a packed schedule almost every weekend for both Thoroughbred and Quarter-Horse racing on the program.
Some of the biggest races are the Handicap de las Américas, as well as the Handicap Día del Charro and the Handicap Copa de Oro.
The best thing is the diversity. Some are sprint events, and some are long-distance races.
Beyond the Races
However, this place isn’t just about horses anymore. Its open infiled space of over 11,000 m2 is perfect for hosting large events like concerts, festivals, and expos.
Plus, it is near the Centro Citibanamex convention center and many other urban landmarks, which makes it perfect for tourists.
